Soil Geotechnical Investigation
The primary objective, in Civil Engineering, while designing any structure like Dams, Bridges, Weirs, Buildings etc. is to determine the stratigraphy and pertinent physical properties of the soil and rock underlying the site so that a safe and economical foundation may be designed. Foundation can either be rested on rock or on good soil strata or weathered formations possessing the required bearing capacity.
The serviceability and performance of the structure depend on the correctness and adequacy of investigations. It is false economy to attempt to save on site investigations as designs based on assumed or inadequate data can lead to necessity of modification in design during construction.
Geotechnical Investigation is planned to obtain the subsoil stratification for the area under consideration and collect samples for laboratory testing to determine the engineering properties such as shear strength, compressibility, along with engineering classification of the subsurface stratum.
